THE GREATEST INSULT TO A CONSERVATIONIST
By Stephanie Smallhouse

The greatest insult to a conservationist is an environmentalist claiming to be one. Environmentalists know that the public is tired of their radical antics; so they are steering the press and public into thinking they are actually conservationists. There has been blatant misuse of the term in several newspaper headlines in recent weeks. The Arizona Supreme Court just ruled that the bidding for state grazing leases must be open to environmental groups. In reporting this, several papers have headlined this as a "win for conservationists". There is quite a distinction between an environmentalist and a conservationist.

According to the New Lexicon Webster's Dictionary, a conservationist "is active in the conserving of natural resources" and conservation is "the wise management and maintenance of natural resources. Conservation is making proper use of renewable resources such as water, vegetation, and animals for a needed product, while maintaining or enhancing the productivity of the resource. Environmentalists' actions continue to result in wasted money, wasted time, no solutions for resource demands, and deserted land that has been removed from tax rolls, while being unmanaged and under-funded.

Aldo Leopold, a famous naturalist/conservationist, once said, "I must confess that it seems to me academic to talk about maintaining the balance of nature. The balance of nature in any strict sense has been upset long ago, and there is no such thing to maintain. The only option we have is to create a new balance objectively determined upon each area in accordance with the intended use of that area." People are here to stay, they must have food and water, live in homes, drive on roads, and consume and make use of harvested materials. Instead of hiding behind lawyers, environmentalists should step up and start working with conservationists in solving demand problems and quit obstructing efforts to achieve "win-win" solutions for people and the environment. What are the people, including the environmentalists, going to survive on when they have forced conservationists out of work, and protested world trade to the extent that this country cannot survive off of expensive and unregulated products of other countries? Producers in the United States provide the safest, most affordable, and most regulated products in the world.

Environmentalists claim theirs is not an exact science and is therefore continually under attack. They are right. Sitting at a desk and drawing circles on a map, driving 35 mph while looking out a car window at public/private rangelands, or sitting in a courtroom does not provide exact science, to say the least. Maintaining and managing natural resources involves actual work on the ground such as: implementing projects, loggers planting trees, range managers maintaining waters, and accordlingly. Doing this, while respecting the rights of people and property, is not an easy task, but a task we take seriously.

Conservationists invest their own money into the land and volunteer countless hours with agencies and conservation districts educating land managers about proper resource management. On the other hand, environmentalists invest money into the coffers of multi-billion dollar non-profit organizations, lawyers, and radical publications that advocate burning buildings, spiking trees, shooting livestock, cutting fences, and providing instructions on how to do it.

Let's call it like it is. An environmentalist is an environmentalist. Leave the conversation to those who are moving forward with working solutions that consider the needs of a sustainable resource, while dealing with demand, economics, and social issues. Conservationists do not have the time or money to be fighting long and costly court battles, and the radical environmentalists know it. If they are looking for a new name, I have a better suggestion. The definition for terrorism is "the policy of using acts inspiring terror as a method of ruling or of conducting political opposition." The next time some environmentalist uses propaganda for instilling terror into the public concerning the supposed destruction of the environment, the headline should read "An Eco-terrorist Victory."
