FRONT PAGE EDITORIALS:  NEWS MEDIA BIAS
By Ted Lang

I can’t believe Brit Hume of Fox News Channel! On Fox News, Sunday, August 25th, Brit reflected somewhat surprisingly that there was a distant possibility that the New York Times was biased in its reporting.

Books have been written about the Times’ bias. So what is so surprising about their mismanagement of news allowing for their opinions to spill out of alignment with the front end of their information jalopy? Their camber and caster has always been a Left-leaning disaster!

In Left-Liberal New Jersey, Samuel Newhouse’s Newark Star-Ledger always splatters opinion on the front page. Take for example the Star-Ledger’s anti-constitutional gun control campaign, the leading reason why New Jersey’s Lautenberg, Torricelli and Corzine continually conspire to disarm the American people to help crooks rob and kill us more easily. Torricelli even originated legislative damage crippling CIA intelligence activities--legislation that aided terrorists in killing 3,000 of our fellow citizens on 9-11!

In the Sunday Star-Ledger, dated October 3, 1999, a huge headline appeared on the front page. It was in the boldest and largest lettering of the three topic lines. There was in fact, only one real news headline: "Troopers’ ousted chief files bias suit." The capital letters of that "headline" stood only three-eighths of an inch high; but what Newhouse and the gang wanted you to focus on was: "Jerseyans favor tougher gun control." The capital letters were five-eighths inches tall! And this in a state with one of the toughest gun control laws in the nation! This "news" was created by the newspaper’s own poll, in an environment controlled solely by them, and asked in a way provoking respondents to answer in the way desired.

Of course, there were the standard falsehoods and lies with their warped polling methods. No need to go further into that. But reflect on that glaring headline, which in fact, was no news at all! Newhouse and the gang want the Second Amendment gone, and in all probability, the entire Constitution as well! But hold on. Don’t mess with Leftist-Liberal media or their First Amendment rights to lie, misrepresent, and suppress factual news that shows reality not aligning with their preconceived Marxist notions!

To the Times’ credit, they have minimized spilling their opinion onto the front page, while Newhouse's Newark Star-Ledger has not; but desperation has been on the increase over at 43rd Street of late. Things are no longer going their way now that their Binglemeister is gone!

Hume had as his guest Wall Street Journal luminary Paul Gigot on the program, and the conversation focused on the creative journalism hammered out by the Times in linking the seemingly contradictory statements made by Republicans Brent Scowcroft, Lawrence Eagleberger and Henry Kissinger to Bush’s "I have a dream" vision of life without Saddam Hussein. When Fox News Channel contacted the Times, none cared to come on the show to defend their news gathering manifesto. Retired Times Managing Editor, Seymour Topping, had to fill in for the absentees.

Both Gigot and Hume agreed there is nothing at all wrong with a newspaper expressing an opinion. In the Times that same Sunday morning, columnist Maureen Dowd was doing her standard Republicans-are-bad and George Bush-is-a-moron routine. But it appeared where it belonged, in their Opinion section. The rub is pretending that earth-shattering news deserving of a major headline is honest, unbiased reporting when it is, in fact, a biased, partisan, political attack.

The incessant repetition of Kissinger’s views and the two day campaign and front page vantage were viewed as a "mistake" and "sloppy journalism" by Topping. And continuous prodding by Hume couldn’t jog Gigot’s memory as to other such recent "mistakes" by the "newspaper of record," including their recent front-paging of opinion on Iraq and the arming of airline pilots.

But it happened, and I see the error of their ways increasing in both volume and magnitude as things continue to not go their way.
