AMERICA'S INTERNAL ENEMY: THE ANTI-AMERICANISM OF THE POLITICAL LEFT
By Paul Walfield

No matter how many times we hear of socalled "Americans" doing or saying things that display their contempt and disdain for America, it never ceases to fascinate and disgust true Americans.

On March 28, 2003, the New Jersey newspaper, The Trentonian, reported on an inter- esting story entitled "Town Bans Yellow Ribbons."

Diane Johnson and her husband, David, support America's warriors and, now that Amer- icans are fighting and dying in the Iraqi desert, the couple had set up a tiny tribute com- posed of yellow ribbons hanging from the Borough's name sign.  "I can't believe the mayor would force me to take down ribbons put there in honor of American troops fight- ing for our freedom in Iraq," said an outraged Diane Johnson.

You see, Fieldsboro's Mayor and Council Members voted unanimously to have the Johnson's take down their tribute to the troops, or, if they failed to do so, to have the ribbons taken down by the town.  It's doubtful that anyone would be shocked to learn that all of the six New Jersey borough's Council Members are Democrats.

Not wanting to risk a hefty fine, the Johnson's took down the little tribute.

The Mayor, Edward "Buddy" Tyler, when confronted with a disbelieving questioner, responded: "Yes, it's true."

However, the Mayor claims the edict by the town directed against the tribute erected by the Johnson's was not politically motivated, but was for practical purposes.  The Mayor said: "Where would you draw a line, if you started allowing the use of public property to exhibit whatever cause anyone wanted?"  Apparently, the Mayor wants everyone to be- lieve that what he did he did for the good of all 1,222 citizens of Fieldsboro, New Jersey.

Apparently, Mayor "Buddy" believes it to be politically controversial to support Amer- ica's military in a time of war.  You see, even though the good Mayor wants all to believe his action was politically neutral, he adds, "We should have had the support of the Unit- ed Nations. I'm not waving flags. Either way, I don't support this war."

These are very perilous days for America.  Never before, has the world been as hostile as it now is to our standing in the world.  The political Left warns us all that we are to blame for being hated, that we are hated because we are arrogant and nationalistic.  Spokesmen and propagandists for the political Left fail to mention that we became great and the world's sole superpower because of the willingness of loyal, patriotic Americans to support and defend our country against all enemies, foreign and domestic.  Our in- ternal enemies on the Left ignore the fact that America is a great nation and the world's principal major power because of the Nationalism of loyal Americans, as well as the country's economic strength and its constitutional democratic political culture.

The problem seems to boil down to the political Left agreeing with the parts of the world that hate us, and the Right, at least most of it, likes the status quo.  It is easy to say that the one's who hate us, the one's who find contempt for an America that has achieved greatness, are the ones with the problem, not the rest of us.  Unfortunately, that doesn't solve anything, though it is true just the same.

We also have a problem, and it is on a par with the foreign devils that fly aircraft into buildings filled with people.  Our problem is one of complacency.  Over the past 40 years, we Americans have grown complacent with what we perceive to be America's indestruct- ible nature.

As a nation, we are good, free, and prosperous.  If we lead the world, it can only be for the best.  All loyal Americans know that; we just have to know that; we couldn't possibly miss it.  Sadly, no matter how much America gives in foreign aid to Third World nations, feeds the world, doctors the sick or brings freedom to the oppressed, the adherents of the political Left, with their notion of the superiority of world citizenship to American citizenship, can only see their vision of the future delayed by a strong America.

While America slept, many of our universities and colleges have become nothing more than indoctrination centers for the political Left.  Many teachers, instructors, and pro- fessors across this nation share a strongly Left-leaning sentiment.  The media too has become a bastion of Liberal Leftist thought.  Except for a precious few news outlets, the media, once a sacred and trusted institution, has become so biased and inclined to edito- rializing in its reporting of events that it is virtually useless when it comes to providing the American public with reliable and balanced news coverage of international develop- ments.

Almost 8 out of 10 Americans agree with the U.S. military action in Iraq.  Yet, our edu- cators and our news media espouse the reverse.  In fact, the voices of elitist Left claim that most American either believe as they do (damn the polls), or Americans are "con- fused."  The members of the elite on the Left are convinced that they simply know better than the vast majority of Americans.

What is most frightening is the amount of anti-Americanism there is in our government.  Whether it is Congressman Charlie Rangel of New York claiming that American soldiers are bombing women and children in Iraq or the Mayor of a small town in New Jersey forbidding Americans from honoring our warriors in his city, the implications are fore- boding.
