FEDERAL EMPLOYEES HAVE TOO MUCH CONTROL
By Michael E. Cook

In the last few days, I have seen some reports on the Internet about government employees' using their positions to push an environmental agenda on the public. It seems to me that they are getting more desperate now that we no longer have a president in office who also has the same agenda.

One report was of a female employee of the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) who was telling children that they should all move into the city and that animals had rights over humans. Then there was the abuse by the government biologists in the State of Washington in planting lynx hair to sway that study. Now I am told that the USFWS also wants to charge $13,000 for a permit to take a couple of woodpeckers. This is all so outrageous.

This has caused me to think about all levels of government and what is going on. When you involve humans in any organization, they bring some of their problems and attitudes to the job. However, they should never be allowed to abuse that privilege. We now have many government employees who have gained positions of power in our governmental bureaucracies and are abusing the power of their positions.

The one thing we have in America is the fact that we the people have the final say, or do we? We elect people to control the bureaucracies. However, the people we elect can't fire these government employees any more because the employees have job ownership and can't be removed from the job without due process. It can cost thousands of dollars to fire a government employee with cause. While I was Sheriff of Coos County, I fired one deputy with cause, he took the case to arbitration, and it cost Coos County $47,000 to fire this person. While we won this case, some cases are lost, and the government has to pay the cost of keeping employees who are now bullet proof and can do anything they want.

Many times there are decisions made in court hearings (pertaining to public personnel matters) that work against government doing its job. I remember one case where a police organization fired two officers who were meeting with a young woman on shift and allowing her to perform oral sex on them. When they were fired for this, the court hearing reinstated them because the judge indicated that they were available for duty and couldn't be fired. So then we had former President Clinton doing the same thing in the Oval Office and his being allowed to stay in office. Has our society sunk so low as to allow this to happen? Is it now accepted behavior?

I don't know about you, but I don't believe the people of America are paying taxes which pay the wages of our government employees and those we elect to office, so that they can have sex on duty. I also don't believe that we should allow those same employees to run over the top of citizens in this great land of ours and abuse the positions they hold. The law must be changed so that we can turn this problem around. Then and only then will we, the people, have our voice back. As long as these government employees are allowed this freedom to abuse, we will not have any control.

When I first started as a deputy sheriff, we worked at the pleasure of the Sheriff. If the Sheriff didn't like the job you were doing, he would fire you. That was the end of it. You didn't have the right to appeal. To keep your job, you followed the Sheriff's wishes to the letter.

Now don't get me wrong. I don't think this was the best system. At the present, however, it has gotten so far the other way I think we need to get back to the middle.

The way to start this move back to the middle is to take several federal laws and revise them. The three federal statutes that come to mind are the Endangered Species Act, the Fair Labor Standards Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. These all started with good intentions, but have been abused to the point that they must be revised and limited. If this isn't done, then our government employees will continue to abuse the people in this great nation of ours. Please contact your elected representatives and ask them to call for revision and control of these laws.
