ISLAMIC TERRORISM & THE MUSLIM PROTECTION MOVEMENT
By Norman Turner
With every death at the hands of Muslim extremists, there comes more words of caution not to blame Islam and, on the other side of the coin, more acts and words of anti-Semi- tism. Reason seems to be dead on this subject. Let's take a look at the facts.
While there may be many peaceful Muslims around the neighborhood, the voice of American Islam has been, at best, restrained. Any comments made condemning acts of terror by Muslim terrorists seem subdued and are usually followed by a "but" with blame attaching to Israel or the United States or both. If a Christian sect were to commit such acts, the voices of Christianity would be raised in a clamor of outrage. We have yet to see that occur in any volume from "moderate" Muslims, foreign or domestic.
Spokesmen from Middle Eastern countries bemoan the suggestion that Muslims are at fault for extremist acts. However, in Egypt, the fact is that Muslims kill Coptic Chris- tians on a regular basis in that country, which is 94 percent Islamic. In Saudi Arabia, our purported "ally," Christians are regularly arrested and at least one man who converted from Islam to Christianity faces the death penalty for that act of sacrilege.
In the United States, Muslims are seemingly given "special" status. Freshmen at the University of North Carolina were given a mandatory assignment to read a pro-Islamic book as an adjunct to registration. In New York, some high schools have given Muslims access to school property for prayer. A similar laxity of the separation of state and religion occurred at the University of California at Riverside. There was not a peep from the ACLU over these activities. What do you suppose would have happened if Christians had attempted a similar activity?
While there are no doubt many Muslims who are peaceful in their intent, to characterize Islam as a more peaceful religion than Christianity or Judaism (as some have) is to ig- nore the words of the Qur'an. Islam is the only major religion that specifically condemns Christianity and Judaism by name in the text of its "bible", the Qur'an. As one of nu- merous examples:
" do not take the Jews or Christians as friends; they are friends of each other and whoever amongst you takes them for a friend, surely he is one of them; Surely Allah does not guide the unjust people." Surrah V, Verse 51
Islam is the least tolerant religion on earth right now and there are few countries in which Muslims reside with another religion that is not afflicted by terrorists from the Muslim religion. While there were times in history when Christians were as intolerant, those days died centuries ago. Islam seems at times fixated in the Dark Ages.
If American Muslims want to demonstrate an intolerance of radicalism, they must speak more loudly than they, as a group, have spoken in the past. We have waited for strong words of condemnation of terrorist acts and have experienced mild words of disapproval, delivered for the most part with expressions of dismay that Muslims are viewed with distrust.
Where are the masses of young American Muslims volunteering for the military to help stamp out this supposed outrage against their religion -- the violent and murderous acts of terrorists who kill in the name of the Prophet? We haven't seen that yet.
And yet the Statist & Socialist Left in this country and in Europe mindlessly rallies to the cause of Islam at every opportunity, while condemning any attempt to bring even the most benign words of Judeo-Christianity to any public place. The Ten Commandments are barred wherever the Left has its will. In the name of "diversity" some school child- ren are encouraged to take Muslim names, dress as Muslims, and to memorize Muslim verses as part of their curriculum.
The Muslim-American Society in their "Project 300," makes a call to Muslims across the nation to do their part for "peace and justice" by volunteering their time and effort toward making the upcoming antiwar on Iraq rally a resounding success." While they have a right to whatever political position they want to take, it would seem that a rally against Muslim extremism would be more appropriate and profitable for them.
No one wants to see innocent Muslims injured, but the Islamic community needs to get its collective act together if their protestations are to be taken seriously by non-Muslim Americans.
