In spite of our horror over the September 11, 2001, attack on the Twin Towers and the Pentagon, most of us try to get on with our lives by burying our heads in the sand--and who can blame us? While Islamic terror against "infidels" has been ratcheting up these past several decades and is now an almost daily occurrence around the world, we numb ourselves to this reality with baseless self-assurances that the odds are against bombs and bullets hitting us or our loved ones personally. We take the frequent national warnings of possible terror attacks in stride and nervously wait for it all to blow over.
The classic American live-and-let-live attitude has resulted in a timid and only superficial study of the violent doctrines of Islam. Americans are so terrified of being accused of intolerance or prejudice that the Federal Bureau of Investigation edited out references to the Arab nationalities of suspicious flight school students before September 11 for fear of being accused of racial profiling. We are told by the mainstream media that Islam is essentially not much different than Christianity. We condescendingly blame backwardness and poverty for the brutal authoritarian regimes in the Islamic world, without considering the possibility that the oppressive poverty and lack of human rights might be connected to the philosophy and methodology of Islam itself.
A critique of militant Islam is no more anti-Muslim or anti-Arab than a crtiique of Nazism would've been anti-German or a critique of Communism would've been anti-Russian. The ideas that inflame radical Muslims must be studied in the same way, and for the same reason, that Mein Kampf and the Communist Manifesto shoould've been studied in their day. To do anything less condemns us to a repetition of history, only this time the evildoers will have weapons at their disposal that could potentially wipe out the human race. We can't afford to leave ourselves in the dark regarding the nature and beliefs of our self-avowed enemy.
Islamic radicals are presently behind most of the world's violent conflicts. In Europe, Islam has achieved sovereignty in Bosnia and Kosovo, is agitating in Serbia and Macedonia, and is stirring up trouble in France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Great Britain, countries in which burgeoning Muslim populations include radicals. The southern rim of Russia is experiencing armed conflict in Chechnya, Abkazia, and Dagestan, where a parade of World War II veterans were just dynamited, causing large loss of innocent life. Violent Islamic movements are operating in China's Singkiang province, the Philippine island of Mindanao, and are committing violence against the Christian minority in Indonesia. Islamic terrorists are attacking India, committing atrocities, and drawing the region into a potential nuclear war. Israel, Lebanon, and Cyprus, as well as Christian minorities in Egypt, Sudan, and other Muslim states, and sub-Saharan Africa are experiencing increasing violence and terror. The United States of America was frontally assaulted on September 11, 2001, with the loss of about 3,000 innocent lives.
America, in alliance with the free world, must insist on unconditional surrender or be doomed to perpetual war and violence. We must form an alliance with like-minded nations, including moderate Islamic states, with the goal of containing and eventually defeating the threat posed by radical Islam. To insure a future of security and peace, we must respond vigorously to all terror by utterly crushing its source.
