PERSEVERANCE: THE KEY TO WINNING THE WAR ON TERROR
By Christopher G. Adamo
For all of the historic splendor, heroism, and sacrifice attributed to it, the American Revolution lasted barely a decade. Yet even that duration would be regarded as insufferably long by the standards of twenty-first century America. Had the present mindset prevailed at this nation’s founding, Washington, and perhaps the entire Continental Congress, might well have had to face incessant accusations that they had “vastly overblown the threats” posed by the Redcoats.
Thus, the America of the “me generation,” being so altered from its heritage, is primed to commence a long but nearly inescapable descent towards eventual servitude. And Europe’s likely fate is no better. In the initial aftermath of 9-11, the people of this country and its allies, in heightened awareness of the threat posed by militant Islam, rallied to calls for the unity and resolve necessary to confront it. Unfortunately, it is becoming apparent that those initial responses, heartfelt and exuberant though they may have been, came from people who had no comprehension of the cost that must be incurred, if they are to back their words with action.
Thirty months after the World Trade Center was destroyed, the bombings in Spain yielded an entirely different result. Though millions took to the streets of Madrid in a show of support for the victims, the elections that immediately followed indicated nothing less than complete capitulation to the agenda of the Islamists. If so large a segment of the civilized world is not capable of maintaining its commitment for a mere two and a half years, what can possibly remain intact against an onslaught that may last thirty years or more? And the grim history of militant Islamic expansionism has been measured not in years or decades, but in centuries.
It is all but inevitable that further strikes will shortly ensue and continue until such time as they are either repulsed, or the intended targets concede absolute victory to the aggressors. Nations such as France, nations that have been openly critical of the United States, are finding out that the danger to their own homeland is inexorably growing. The next target of the terrorists will be chosen strictly for its political value to the terrorists (and Spain’s elections greatly increased the “value” of all potential targets).
If France remains untouched in the short term, while other nations that supported the U.S.A. are brought down as was Spain, the most profound effect on the French will be to have their fate sealed for lack of any remaining allies. In the end, their pacifism in the face of encroaching Islamism will do nothing to vindicate them in the eyes of the aggressors. Their “guilt,” as well as our own, is founded in the simple fact that the government of France is not officially Muslim.
From the very day of the World Trade Center attacks, high-level government officials in the U.S.A. have diligently sought to portray the conflict as anything but a “religious war.” This they have done for two reasons. First, they rightly endeavored to prevent backlash against innocent, law-abiding Muslims living in this country. But a secondary concern was the avoidance of confrontation with what can only be regarded as the advance armies of Islamists living here, who have set their sights on Europe and America.
Unfortunately, those high-level officials are simply wrong. Statements from the terrorists, made in the aftermath of the horrendous carnage in Madrid, inarguably prove as much.
Afghanistan and Iraq were not the entirety of that element of Islam currently threatening America. Nor is that threat likely to simply evaporate because, in the relative tranquility that has temporarily returned to the domestic scene since 9-11, many people have simply chosen to believe that it no longer exists.
The people of America cannot afford to elect a president in November whose guiding philosophy is one of appeasement. However imperfectly the War on Terror may have been conducted thus far, it is, nevertheless, a war from which America cannot retreat. Any attempt to do so will only guarantee its return to our shores. And we have no place to run.
